Babes Who Brunch

It's no secret that brunch is my absolute most favorite part of the entire weekend, but it is even better when you're also surrounded by your best friends. Last Sunday, my girlfriends and I had the opportunity to brunch in style at Public House. This hot spot has been on my list since I moved to the city, but for some reason I always thought of it more as a nighttime joint. The great news: it is BOTH!

The bloody Mary alone will knock your socks off. It is the perfect mix of sweet & spicy. To top it off - literally - it comes with the best "goodie" skewer I have ever seen. With vegetables, cheese, bacon, jump buffalo shrimp and a chicken wing, you are sure to have a nice little pre-brunch snack. And although I would not call my self a bloody Mary connoisseur, I tend to be a creature of a habit and always find myself ordering them. Being at least somewhat educated on what makes a good bloody vs. having drink regret, I can tell you that I will most likely end back at Public House this Sunday to continue my new favorite brunch tradition!

Also, if you haven't already mapped out your Labor Day Weekend reservations yet, make sure to reserve a table at Public House's outside patio before the Summer is official gone (sigh). Public House will be serving brunch from 10am-3pm and they are already fully stocked on their bloody Mary mix! #LDWBrunch

LifeRide with Chris Salgardo

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the kick off for the 5th Annual LifeRide for amfAR event, which took place at the Michigan Avenue Kiehl's store. For those of you unfamiliar, amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is one of the world's leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment and education. Since 1985, amfAR has invested more than $366 million in its programs and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide. In honor of amfAR, Kiehl's is offering a Limited Edition Ultimate Strength Hand Salve. One hundred percent of proceeds from the sale of this limited edition product, up to $25,000, will benefit amfAR and its efforts. Not only did I try this amazing product, which has now become my new morning go-to, but I also got to chat with the President of Kiehl's himself, Mr. Chris Salgardo.

LD: So how about that ride in?! Name that movie! Just kidding, Chris. Honestly though, how has the ride been for you so far?

CS: Hahaha! That’s amazing, and it’s amazing. First we were in Milwaukee to kick of the 5th annual LifeRide with Harley Davidson, who is actually our amazing sponsor this year, so for anyone who is a motorcycle enthusiast this is like the mecca of events. A lot of us have been doing this together for years now, so it’s all about coming together, having a great time and ultimately supporting amFAR and the fight against HIV.

LD: How did you originally get involved with amFAR and come up with the idea of LifeRide?

CS: We {Kiehl’s} have three pillar causes: HIV/AIDS, the environment and children’s charities. I really want to combine my love for our products with my passion for motorcycle riding; thus the Kiehl’s amFAR 7-day charity ride was born!

LD: What is your favorite part about being the President of Kiehl’s?

CS: That I can make people look better! I was a Kiehl’s customer 25 years ago - someone had turned me on to the shave cream (when I use to shave!). That was the first product, then I found another, I just kept going, and then I found out that all of the products were made in America. I was sold!

LD: Would you say that the shave cream is still your favorite product?

CS: Oh my goodness, if you looked in my medicine cabinet right now it would look like this store! I use everything. I would say my favorite right now is our midnight recovery. It’s a really interesting formula made with very high potent botanical extracts that has almost no water in it. You just notice a difference in your skin no matter what age you are.

LD: At a quick glance, what would you recommend for my skin?

CS: I would put you in our new calendula gel cleanser. It goes with one of our most successful products, which is our calendula toner, that’s made with marigold flowers - someone actually pours the petals into the bottle. It will help the spots where you’re dryer, but tighten you up where you may be a bit oily. I would also recommend our ultra facial moisturizer that just feels great.

LD: I better go grab that shopping basket over there then and get started, haha! And last question, Chris. If you could do one thing in Chicago while you were here what would it be?

CS: You know, I really just want pizza! Everyone talks about the pizza here. I just want a deep dish, Chicago style pizza, but eat it by myself so that I can just dive into it, have the cheese all over my beard, and just indulge!

Time for a Change...

One of my all time favorite Sex and the City quotes is "After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your hearts...and if you're very lucky, just a plane ride away." If it were up to me, I would add another sentence and say, "And if you're in desperate need of change, just redecorate!"

To be honest, change is something that has terrified me for most of my life. I'm not sure what it is, but it has never been easy and has always rattled me no matter what it is in regards to. Recently, I have made the executive decision not to run away from this feeling - to embrace it as a new adventure. Of course, that is much easier said than done, so my first baby step towards this new movement is to begin with a complete makeover of my bedroom.
